Hazel and Lezah

Once there was a Mouse, Her name was Hazel. She lived in a little burrow under a rosebush. One morning, while Hazel was doing some spring cleaning, her friend Skip the lizard, tunneled straight though her kitchen wall! He dusted himself off and looked at Hazel.

“I am so sorry! I just could not find the door!” he apologized.

“Oh it’s quite fine Dear! My burrow looks so much more open now anyway!” she answered. Hazel was quite the forgiving mouse. “What brings you to my humble abode?” She asked.

Skip smiled. “I come on behalf of your sister, Lezah.” He revealed a shiny pearl bracelet. It was a large bracelet, since it probably first belonged to a house giant.

Hazel gasped.

Hazel and Lezah used to be very close, but one day Lezah decided she was tired of being a field mouse. So she moved away and became a house mouse. For a field mouse it was very improper to live in  a house. And so Lezah became a disgrace to the family. No mouse would speak to her, and Hazel and Lezah slowly drifted apart. So why after all these years would she send her a gift? Hazel was greatly offended. But since Skip had traveled all this way to deliver this, she was not about to turn him down. She thanked him, took the bracelet and sent him on his way with some sunflower seeds. Something must be done about this bracelet! Hazel thought to herself. Then, she had an idea. She peaked out her mouse hole door and looked around. She saw her friend Lilia.

“Oh Lillia, won't you come over for some blackberries?” Hazel called as she waved her over.

Lillia was a little rabbit  who had a fancy for blackberries. But the minute Lilya walked through Hazel’s front door, she knew she was up to something.

“Lillia! I have a gift for you!” Hazel exclaimed as she served her some blackberries.

Lillia sighed. For she, like Hazel, was spring cleaning her burrow and did not want any more little trinkets cluttering up her shelves.

“What is the occasion?”  Lillia asked.

“Um, I just thought you would like a present!” Hazel answered. Then she quickly revealed the bracelet.

Lillia, who was a very polite rabbit, took the gift gratefully though she really did not care for house giant’s things. But as she walked out the door, she had only one thought; Something must be done about this bracelet!

So as soon as she saw her sister Sunny hop by, Lillia quickly gave it to her.

Back at Hazel’s burrow, Hazel was quite pleased with herself. Not only had she gotten rid of the bracelet, but she had also finished spring cleaning! She was about to treat herself to some nutcake when she heard a knock at the door. It was Skip!

“Hello Hazel. I am so sorry but it seems I forgot to give you this.” Skip said, handing Hazel an envelope. “I dropped it on the way here and didn’t notice until I saw it lying on the ground outside my home.”

“Thank you for your trouble.” Hazel said.

She sat down in her armchair and opened the envelope. It read;

Dear Hazel, My apologies for not writing for so long, it has been difficult to send letters with the dogs always out and about. I wanted to tell you that the house giants have found my home. They put up traps and threw away most of my belongings (Mostly old things thankfully) so I cannot live there anymore. I am sending you my most prized possession; a pearl bracelet. I have packed the remains of my things and am moving out. If it is no trouble please keep the bracelet safe until I arrive. I promise after this you won't have to see me ever again. I know it was hard for me to leave you and everyone and you have my deepest apologies. You have a right to be mad.

I do miss you terribly, Lezah.

Hazel felt like crying.

What have I done!? She thought. Before she could do anything, she heard a knock at the door.

“Come in.” Hazel said, sorrowfully.

But it wasn’t Lezah. It was Jay the bluejay.

“Hello Hazel. I thought you would enjoy a bracelet. Bye!” he said, tossing Hazel the bracelet before flying off.

She sat there stunned with the bracelet in her paw.

How…?

Then she laughed. Lillia must have re-gifted the gift. And then it was probably re-gifted again and again until it got to Jay who re-gifted it back to her!

“Hazel?” a voice called from behind the rose bush. “I was so sure she lived here.”

“I’m over here!” Hazel called rushing forward.

“Oh Hazel!” Lezah said when she saw her sister. “I knew I could count on you!. Thank you!”

Hazel blushed. “Oh…yes. Would you like to come inside?” she asked, taking her paw.

“Y-you really want me to come in?” Lezah asked.

“Of course! You are my sister!”

Lezah smiled.

“Have you found a place to stay yet?” Hazel asked as she poured two cups of lavender tea.

Lezah sighed. “Unfortunately no. King Climber offered a room in his tree but I don't think I would like to be so high up.” she admitted, sipping her tea.

“Well then stay with me!” Hazel offered.

“You would not mind? Oh, thank you!” she exclaimed.

“I have missed you.” Hazel said.

“This is great! Let me get Sweets!” Lezah said, running out the door.

“Sweets?” Hazel asked.

“My pet cockroach!” Lezah answered.

“Wait, what!?”
